The Family and Parenting Team provide support to the Family and Parenting Board, the strategic group, which drives forward the implementation of the Family and Parenting Strategy 2008-2012.
They also support the Parenting Operational Group, the Service Providers Group and the Sunderland Parenting Panel.
The Parenting Operational Group is responsible for promoting the Sunderland Parenting Offer around the City and for developing the workforce so that Parenting practitioners have the training that they require to deliver the Sunderland Parenting Offer and that other colleagues across the City are informed enough about the offer so that they can signpost parents and carers to it.
The Service Providers Group provides a mechanism through which parenting provision can be commissioned and monitored.
The Sunderland Parenting Panel allows parents, carers and referring agencies to bring to the table individual cases of parents for whom no parenting provision currently exists. Where possible, this provision is then commissioned in.
From April 2010, the Family and Parenting Team will be rolling out the ‘Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities’ programme. This is a universal preventative programme lasting 13 weeks and is suitable for any parent/carer of a young person aged 12-18. The programme has been piloted extensively and the National Academy for Parenting Practitioners report that recruitment and retention among parents is extremely good. Local Authorities who already offer the programme report that it has had good outcomes for parents/carers and their young people including: increased parental self-esteem and confidence, reduced child behavioural difficulties and parents able to build child self-esteem. Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities training has been purchased for 24 practitioners. The training will be delivered between Monday 08 March and Friday 12 March 2010. Once the workforce is in place, practitioners will receive ongoing support from the Family and Parenting Team to maintain and update their skills; to market the programme and to recruit parents on to it. Further information about who can apply for training, funding support and application forms can be obtained from FamilyParentingTeam@sunderland.gov.uk
